Local stages: what each one has open right now
Orange County and LA houses that cast from open calls. Status is read off each company’s own audition page — a page can be live and still have nothing posted.

Auditions page live, but the newest call on it is POTUS, March 2–3, 2026, held at Long Beach Playhouse — months past. Treat as stale until it refreshes.

No audition page at /auditions (404). Season and education pages only — call the box office, 949.497.2787, to ask how they cast.
No page
A stale page is information too. If the newest call on a company’s audition page is months old, the company is between seasons — that is when a headshot-and-résumé email to the casting address gets read.
How the money actually works
Two very different business models get called “auditions.” Know which one you are on.
Membership platforms
You pay a subscription for access to a board of casting calls, then submit yourself. The production never charges you, but the platform is a business — the subscription is the product.
FreeCasting Networks takes a free talent account and shows the board; Actors Access and Mandy are free to register, with paid upgrades.
Direct-to-company
The theatre, studio or background-casting office posts its own call. Nobody in the middle is selling you access — which also means nobody is marketing to you, so you have to watch the page.
PrintedCentral Casting: “Sign up to work as a paid background actor,” with a separate open-roles board for people already signed up.
PrintedPlaybill Jobs bills itself as Broadway’s #1 job site — listings mix performers, stage management, wardrobe and admin.
Red flags worth walking away from
These show up on real boards and in real DMs. Each one is a reason to stop, not to negotiate.
✕
Paying to audition. A casting call that charges a submission or “audition fee” is selling you the audition, not casting a role. The platform subscription is the only normal cost in this chain.
✕
“Guaranteed casting” or “you’re pre-selected.” Casting directors do not pre-approve strangers who have not read. That phrasing exists to close a sale.
✕
Mandatory photographer, coach or headshot bundle. Legitimate notices recommend; scams require, and the “discount” is the product.
✕
Union claims with no paper. If a notice says SAG-AFTRA or AEA, the production should be able to show it is a signatory — union status is a contract term, not a vibe.
✕
Sides and personal details before a date, time and place. A real call tells you where and when to be, who is reading, and what to prepare.
First 30 days, in order
The sequence that produces callbacks instead of receipts.
Get the free profile up first. Casting Networks and Actors Access both take a free account with headshots, résumé and performance media — that profile is what casting actually searches.
Pick one paid board, not three. One subscription used hard beats three half-used. Backstage’s yearly welcome rate is the cheapest way to test it.
Track five local stages by hand. The table above is the starting list. Check each audition page weekly — SCR and Chance both post in bursts when a season is announced.
Sign up with Central Casting if you want paid set time. Background work pays, builds set familiarity, and is the fastest callback loop for a new face.
Submit to what you actually fit. Age range, union status and location filters exist on every board; ignoring them is how submissions get ignored.
